June is a brilliant time to sow seeds and plant out young crops. The warmer days, longer evenings and soft, workable soil make it the ideal moment to really get things growing. Whether you’re refreshing beds, filling gaps, or sowing something completely new, there’s plenty you can still plant at this stage in the season.

What to Sow Now

At this time of year, you can still sow a wide range of crops directly into the ground or containers. Think beetroot, carrots, turnips, dwarf French beans, runner beans, radishes, and swedes. Fast-growing salad options like lettuce, and rocket are great for little-and-often sowing, giving you a steady harvest all summer.

If you’re planning ahead, it’s also the perfect time to start Brussels sprouts, purple sprouting broccoli, and autumn cabbages – all of which benefit from a long growing season. You can even get a second round of sweetcorn and courgettes started now, especially in warmer spots.

Sow Smart: Make the Most of Early Summer

Don’t let the longer days go to waste — there’s still plenty of time to grow something fresh. Spring onions, pak choi, fennel, and even Chinese cabbage can all be sown in June, offering something a little different for your dinner plate later in the season.

Stagger your sowings of leafy greens and salad crops every couple of weeks to keep a continuous supply coming — especially handy during BBQ season!

And if you’re planting out anything raised indoors, don’t forget to harden it off gradually. Let your young plants adjust to life outside by giving them a few hours a day in a sheltered spot, building up slowly to full exposure.
